The Cove
Harbour Lights Hope Cove Kingsbridge Devon TQ7 3HQ
We love a beach bar, and the UK – and Devon in particular – has some real humdingers. But this is one of our favourites, described by Devon Life as ‘the South West's best craft beach bar by a country mile’ – not just for its beautiful position on Hope Cove beach, just west of Kingsbridge and Salcombe, but also for its friendly welcome and great food and drink – in particular brilliant seafood and local ales.
A family-owned and -run place, it's café, pub and restaurant – open all year despite its beachfront location, and serving drinks and food from morning until late at night, with an emphasis on local suppliers. You can park nearby, or it makes a perfect stop-off if you're walking the coastal path. Enjoy a great cooked breakfast until 11.45am, plus crab sandwiches, fish finger clubs, lobsters delivered fresh from their offshore pots, hand-cut chips, really decent homemade burgers, steaks, fish and chips and handmade pizzas too – not to mention a superb seafood platter and lovely snacks like chorizo Scotch Eggs and salt and pepper squid.
Everything is fresh and seasonal, and they also have live SKY and BT sport and regular live music – plus their selection of Devon beers, ales and ciders (and craft beers from the likes of Beavertown, Tiny Rebel etc) is legendary. Is there a better place around to enjoy superb, local, seasonal, home-cooked food? Probably not – and the service and warmth of the welcome make it taste even better.
