The Brace of Pheasants
Plush Dorset DT2 7RQ
Impossibly picturesque, this sixteenth-century thatched pub is tucked away down a steep and wiggling country lane but is well worth the effort to find it. Inside it’s all wooden floors, low beams, open fires and a welcoming bar that serves real ales, including some local brews. The highly-rated restaurant serves local fish and game, including dishes such as garlic and herb marinated local venison (£19), while the cheese board has a not-to-be-missed selection of Dorset cheeses. There are also a few rooms – some above the pub, others in a converted skittle alley at the back – all are clean and comfortable (£100–115 a room).
