For a romantic weekend away, Summer Lodge, in the pretty village of Evershot, is the ultimate country house hotel. It oozes history and atmosphere – the west wing of the hotel was designed by Thomas Hardy himself during his days as an architect – while the ambience is friendly and relaxed with attentive, discreet service. Public transport is poor in the area so driving is a must.
The large, luxurious rooms are decorated in traditional style, ranging from country cottage to stately home, and come with nice touches such as a fruit basket and homemade shortcake. Each has an individual look, but don't expect any accent of 21st-century design, here everything is drapes, velvet and floral design.
The facilities are good too: four acres of manicured grounds containing tennis courts and a croquet lawn, an indoor pool and spa, a deer park plus a top-notch restaurant. None of this comes cheap, but it’s worth it if you’re looking for a luxurious treat.
