Durlston Country Park
Lighthouse Road Swanage BH19 4JL
Durlston Country Park consists of areas of grassland and woodland strung across dramatic clifftops just to the south of Swanage – part of both the South West Coast Path and the Jurassic Coast. Durlston Castle – built by Victorian George Burt – houses the park's visitor centre with a collection of fossils and details of the latest wildlife sightings – the coastal waters are particularly rich in marine life and dolphins, certain types of whale and even giant turtles have been spotted here. The park is also known for its birdlife and rare butterflies. Just below the castle can visit an unusual Globe, made of Portland limestone, before continuing down the coastal path to the site of Tilly Whim caves, where Portland stone was once quarried. You can also visit the blowy Anvil Point lighthouse, often open for tours ( www.trinityhouse.co.uk).
