Ferens Art Gallery
Queen Victoria Square, Hull, HU1 3RA
Looking better than ever since its City of Culture-inspired refit, the Ferens can easily hold its own against any of the big northern provincial art hitters in places like Newcastle, Manchester and Leeds. There's a huge sweep through art history, with particular pride in Lorenzetti's Renaissance masterpiece, 'Christ Between Saint Paul and Saint Peter' and Franz Hals' 'Portrait of a Young Woman'. Go now, in culture year, and you can also catch five of Francis Bacon's notorious 'Screaming Popes', while the Turner Prize is coming to the gallery in September 2017, a real feather in the cap for the city.
