When the Whymant family came to the Georgian country house of Tickton Grange over forty years ago, it was dilapidated and unloved in the extreme. Now it's one of Yorkshire's finest country house hotels, collecting award after award for its accommodation, food and highly personal service. The family story is writ large across the hotel – successful Northamptonshire shoemakers who moved back to the place they used to come on holiday, and who have subsequently renovated every inch of the building using local craftsmen and artisans. It's a terrific place to stay by any standard.
There are 21 guest rooms spread across various buildings – apart from the main house, lodgings are also in the renovated stables and pump room, servants' quarters and workers' cottages. Family members grew up in these rooms and played in the gardens, so the sense of pride here is palpable. As you may imagine, no two rooms are the same, but you can expect country-house-chic and plenty of welcoming touches throughout – homemade biscuits, fresh flowers, good Italian coffee and high-quality tea, a thoughtful selection of books and Bramley toiletries in well-appointed en-suite bathrooms. The larger rooms have king-size beds and all rooms have good wifi and flatscreen TVs. Nothing's too much trouble, and service comes with a broad smile from staff who have been with the family for years. Dogs are welcome at Tickton Grange and they'll provide a dog bed, towel, bowls and treats in the room in readiness for canine guests.
With Beverley and Bridlington on the doorstep, this is the perfect romantic East Yorkshire weekend getaway. The hotel is embraced by its own 16 acres of grounds and gardens, while beyond lie the wild landscapes of the Yorkshire Wolds that so inspired Bridlington boy David Hockney. You can pay further tribute to our most famous living artist by indulging in an afternoon tea in the eponymous Hockney Room – one of a trio of beautiful dining spaces within Tickton Grange's renowned restaurant The Bloomsbury Room. With a kitchen headed up by their long-standing chef James Pulford, the food served is delicious, organic and local, and echoes the individuality, style and passion that sums up the rest of the hotel. Breakfast too is always local, fresh and bountiful – this is Yorkshire, after all!
