The City Mill
The National Trust, Bridge Street Winchester SO23 0EJ
Squatting over the river at the very bottom of the high street, the lovely little City Mill features a variety of exhibitions and displays charting the history of milling. It’s most interesting, however, to visit on a weekend afternoon (Sat & Sun 2pm–4pm) when well-oiled cogs crank into action to produce powder-soft wholemeal flour. It is one of very surviving examples of a working water powered corn mill and it remained in regular use until the early 20th century. It is now owned by the national trust and open seven days a week. Something different to do and watch out during school holidays for special children's activities and events.
