There’s more to Lainston House than meets the eye. The long, winding driveway leads up to the main 17th-century manor house, which looks out over wooded hills and well-kept lawns. Inside, there are homely bedrooms with thick carpets and classic but tasteful décor, and an inviting bar area with bookshelves on the walls and a bright and breezy lounge for afternoon tea.
But beyond all this, Lainston has a few secrets up its sleeve. Out by the car park you’ll find the cookery school, where there are half or full day and evening classes offer lessons in everything from Japanese cuisine to cooking with fish. There’s a kitchen garden just beyond the car park, and nearby an aviary where birds of prey such as falcons and owls are kept for bookable interactive experiences.
The grounds themselves make for lovely walking territory, and there’s intrigue aplenty from old dovecotes to crumbling chapel ruins dating back to the 12th century. Ask for a map at reception and take the dog exploring around the vast estate.
There are plenty of activities on offer, from archery to tennis to clay pigeon shooting, and the on-site restaurant, The Avenue, is a fine-dining experience. Book the Chef’s Table for an extra special night. Nearby, the city of Winchester is just a 10-minute drive, Highclere Castle is just 25-minutes and the family-friendly Paultons Park and Peppa Pig World just half an hour.
