Westgate Museum
High Street Winchester SO23 9AP
The cramped steps in this medieval archway, one of only two surviving gateways into the city, lead up to a dinky museum that displays a unique collection of the city’s weights and measures, including the “Winchester Bushel”, as well as various items from its time as a debtors’ jail – you can still see the graffiti carved into the walls by 17th-century prisoners, etching their names in the brickwork or counting their days until a trip to the Winchester gallows. Children’s activities range from brass rubbings to trying on hefty replica armour and it's worth checking out whats on during school holidays in particular when special events often run.
