The Green Man
53 Southgate St Winchester Hampshire SO23 9EH
As they say themselves, the Green Man is so much more than just a pub. Indeed some might say it's not really a pub at all, more of a bar and restaurant, and a rather good one at that, with a plush interior given over to a comfy lounge bar – furnished in retro-contemporary style and serving food, and a classy restaurant serving excellent Modern British food from a fixed-price menu that changes every month. The restaurant menu is admirably short, with just 4 starters, main courses and puddings to choose from – usually a couple of meat dishes, a fish and a veggie option. Imagine starting with wood pigeon or edamame and asparagus salad, moving onto pan-fried sea bass or belly pork and finishing up with panna cotta, rhubarb crumble or local cheeses. There's also a well-priced bar menu if you want to spend less or if you just want something simpler. The bar specializes in cocktails and hosts special events like 'Bloody Sundays' and 'G&T Thursdays'; the restaurant has stripped brick walls yet still manages to pull off a cosy country house vibe; while they've also renovated the pub's old skittle alley as a venue for private functions, the Outhouse. All in all a good place for food, drink or merriment, or indeed all three – either regularly or on a special occasion.
The Owner Says
The Green Man is so much more than a pub. It is a little enclave of hospitality; a stylish hang-out, and a great meeting place for friends, family or an intimate tête-à-tête.
At The Green Man we specialise in locally sourced produce, resulting in an array of interesting and scrumptious dishes. All of that, coupled with lovely, bubbly staff and wonderfully welcoming service, makes The Green Man a rather special place to be.
Come and join us in our eclectic retro furnished bar. Enjoy a great choice of beers, an impressive and very well researched wine list (hic!), and our specialty cocktails, not forgetting of course our rather unique boutique spirits list.
We’re just a stone’s throw away (4 minutes to be precise) from the historic Winchester Cathedral, surrounded by culture, and noted as a hidden gem in the old capital of England. Not only do we have a very cool and relaxing bar area, but we also have an exquisite Edwardian style dining room, which is the perfect place for a Sunday roast or destination dinner. And if you are looking for that special venue for your forthcoming event then our Outhouse is a quirky mixture of rustic and industrial style; ideal for birthday’s, afternoon tea’s and specialty vintage weddings.
