The first of Rick Stein's restaurants to open outside Cornwall, his Winchester venture is a smart, sleek and welcome addition to the local dining scene. Like a lot of what Stein does, it's a simple enough affair, cooking moderately priced, often imaginative fish and seafood dishes in a pleasant, contemporary environment, and serving them with some style and always a cheerful smile: not rocket science admittedly, but they pull it off here (as in Cornwall) with some aplomb. The menu is as eclectic and international as we've come to expect form Stein & Co, with some of his 'standards' – salt and pepper squid, miso salmon – alongside oysters and langoustines from the shellfish bar, lovely grilled mackerel and excellent fish soup with all the trimmings. It's not exactly cheap, but it's not all that expensive either, with the amount you spend really up to you and whether you got for the pricey options (Indonesian curry) or the cheaper ones (hake and mash, cod and chips).
