Geales
2 Farmer St Notting Hill London W8 7SN
Nestled behind the Gate Cinema in trendy Notting Hill, this is probably the poshest fish and chip shop you are ever likely to find. A simple cod and chips is likely to set you back more than a tenner, but it's always good, or you could really push the trawler out and celebrate with a lobster spaghetti washed down with a £65 bottle of champagne; plus they do wondrous fish and seafood platters to share. Lunchtimes are more modest, when you can get two courses, including fish and chips and fish soup to start, for £9.95, or three courses, with a sticky toffee number to finish, for £12.95.
Traditionalists and older residents in the area will hanker after the days when life and Geales was a lot simpler and they stuck to traditional dishes complete with embroidered tablecloths. They will also probably mourn the demise of Costas fish and chips that used to be round the corner but they have gone. The redeveloped Geales has at least kept the tradition of the fish and chips theme and is definitely worth a visit - especially for a weekend lunch.
