The Brasserie at the Barnham Broom hotel isn't really a brasserie; it's not open all day and it doesn't really serve brasserie-style food. But it is deservedly popular with both residents and non-residents, a sleek and contemporary restaurant that manages to be relaxed and informal but at the same time has the feel of a big night out: quite a feat. Like the decor, there's a pleasing simplicity to its Modern British menu, which changes every two months or so and showcases a selection of Norfolk produce, for example local pork saltimbocca, confit of Norfolk chicken and a great local fillet of sea trout with poached egg, pancetta and spinach, complemented by a reassuringly ever-present selection of really good steaks served with a variety of mix-and-match sauces and marinades. Lovely, classic, desserts, too, and they do an excellent roast lunch on Sundays. But perhaps the most impressive thing is the price – very reasonable indeed for cooking and service of this quality. Worth a try, whether or not you're staying at the hotel. .
