The Band Room
Low Mill Farndale North Yorks YO62 7UY
The greatest small venue on earth? That's the Handsome Family's view, while the Guardian calls it 'the shed that rocks'. Make no mistake, this is one seriously cool, seriously idiosyncratic music venue, deep in the heart of the North York Moors in the lovely daffodil valley of Farndale. Built in the 1920s for the Farndale Silver Band, the 100-capacity venue only puts on a few gigs a year but they are worth waiting for – Cerys Matthews, Kate Rusby, Willy Mason, Waterson Carthy, the Pine Leaf Boys, Steve Forbert and dozens of others from the folk, blues, alt.country, Americana, world and roots scene have played here. It's a pretty magical experience, arriving in a rural vale, clutching your drinks (they don't sell booze), hunkering down for a kicking music set and then off out afterwards into the clear, starry night.
