Ship Inn
Low Newton NE66 3EL
Is there a better pub in Northumberland than the ship-shape, seaside, seriously stunning Ship? That's up to you, but this is pub-heaven as far as we're concerned. Set at the back of an impossibly cute green surrounded by fishermen's cottages, just yards away from the fabulous beach at Low Newton, the Ship is simply magnificent. It does everything right, from the barebones maritime interior to the in-house brewery turning out ales such as 'Sea Wheat'and 'Ship Hop'. The food menu is shortish and plays to local strengths – locally caught fish, crabs and lobster, organic lamb koftas and other meat sourced from local farms, interesting veggie specials and traditional puds. There really is nothing finer than a pint and a fresh crab sandwich, sprawled outside on the grass, with a walk to Dunstanburgh Castle to come, to blow the cobwebs away. Just be warned that hundreds of others have the same idea on sunny days, so get there early or be prepared to wait in line at the bar – even so, a well-managed kitchen turns out the food pretty quickly. Several nights a week a small evening menu is served as well, and there are regular music nights from great musicians. Oh go on then, another pint of 'Red Herring' it is.
