The Minerva
Nelson Street Hull HU1 1XE
The historic old fishermens' pub down by the pier head is many a Hull booze-hounds' favourite. It attracts a mix of dyed-in-the-wool locals and
knowing types who love the ‘don’t get above
yourself’ vibe. The bar staff are friendly and down to earth, and the pub food is traditional, tasty and served in massive portions – a stonking great fish and chips and the homemade steak pie are the highlights. It's also a cask ale and real cider place (there's an annual beer-fest), with a warren of rooms inside (including what's claimed as the country's smallest pub room – squeeze in and see if you agree). Seats outside have sweeping views out across the Humber estuary, making this a great place to while away a sunny Hull afternoon with a pint and a bag of crisps.
