Hull Truck Theatre
50 Ferensway Hull HU2 8LB
One of the UK's most innovative theatre companies champions contemporary theatre from its sparkling base in Hull. Established over 40 years ago, Hull Truck moved to its St Stephen's home in 2009, where it continues to light a beacon for new theatre writing and contemporary productions of all kinds. It has a serious pedigree, having hosted writers and directors like Anthony Minghella and Alan Plater, though it was under playwright John Godber – appointed artistic director in 1984 – that it shot to prominence, putting plays like 'Up n' Under' and 'Bouncers' into the national consciousness. Two theatre spaces, a vibrant community programme and a decent cafe-bar put 'Truck', as it's affectionately known in the city, right at the heart of Hull's cultural offer. As well as new theatre productions and rebooted British classics expect stand-up comedy, fringe shows, concerts, cabaret, films and family friendly events, with something exciting happening pretty much every week of the year.
