Ben Nevis
Cameron Square Fort William PH33 6AN
The ‘Mountain of Heaven’ is simply known to many Scots as ‘The Ben’. Soaring 1,344m (4,408 ft) from sea level above Fort William this hulking chunk of rock is a monster, and a real challenge, but the good news is you can walk rather than climb it. Most fit and well-equipped walkers should be able to make the summit on the accessible (but still taxing) ‘tourist route’ in good weather – when the weather turns, walkers lose their way and in winter the mountain can be literally a killer. If that puts you off, Glen Nevis below is more welcoming, with trails you can walk and cycle on, some of which may be familiar as the backdrop to a few scenes from the film, Braveheart.
