Wales Millennium Centre
Bute Place Cardiff Bay CF10 5AL
Like its near namesake, the Wales Millennium Centre is a stunning addition to Cardiff’s flourishing architectural landscape. A bronze-tinted stainless steel roof rises above a beautiful facade inscribed with 7ft-high letter windows which spell out a poem in both Welsh and English. In a nod to the country’s industrial past, the whole of the interior, including the acoustically superb main auditorium, was fashioned using native Welsh materials, with riveted steel walls and ceilings, and coal-like pillars. If you’re not here to attend a show – it’s home to the Welsh National Opera as well as being the city’s principal venue for touring West End productions – daily guided tours take in the backstage areas, as well as those parts of the auditorium normally off limits to the public.
