The Potted Pig
27 High St Cardiff CF10 1PU
Although it’s only been around a short while, the Potted Pig has already established itself as the pick of Cardiff’s city centre restaurants. Occupying the reconditioned vaults of a former bank – some of the old doors and bars remain in situ – this long and narrow brick-vaulted cellar restaurant can’t be bettered for a romantic liaison. And the food’s not half bad either. Pork, naturally, is integral to the menu – potted pig with toast and pickles comes as a starter, or you can go the whole hog (literally) and share a suckling pig – but there are plenty of other meaty treats to consider, such as lamb, duck and fish, in addition to some mouth-watering grills. The wine card superbly complements the food, and, er, if you fancy a shot of gin with your meal, there are some 30 varieties to choose from. Reservations are essential, and children are not permitted in the restaurant in the evenings.
