Wild About Pembrokeshire
St David's Pembrokeshire, Wales.
Our ancestors did it as a matter of course, finding all manner of tasty food along the shoreline and in the hedgerows and woodlands, and now St David's-based Wild About Pembrokeshire is offering courses which allow you to relearn these ancient skills, discovering how to identify and collect wild plants that you can't just eat or drink but in some cases provide natural cosmetics, remedies and dyes – or even be utilised as arts and crafts materials. You can do a short, two-hour walk just to get a taster, or a go for a whole day's beginner's class, which typically meets in the centre of St David's in the morning and heads off to a local beach to find a good selection of seaweeds, mussels and other shellfish, along with various land-based goodies. You're shown the best way to find and make use of the ingredients, and come lunchtime you light a beach fire to prepare the food you've collected. It's great knowledge to have, and can make a day at the beach a whole lot more interesting. But above all most of what you collect is surprisingly delicious.
