It's a measure of the extraordinary dog-friendly nature of Half Moon Lane Cottage that you are promised a 'hound and human holiday' above all else. And if you've spent hours scouring websites for the merest mention of how your dog might be catered for, then you really have struck the motherlode here in deepest Suffolk, with a canine-centric cottage surrounded by walks, forests and nature reserves.
For humans, the attraction is clear – a renovated old country cottage on the edge of the Waveney Valley, with three double bedrooms (one en-suite), a family bathroom, lounge and library with double-sided woodburner, open-plan kitchen-diner and outside space with patio, lawn and barbecue facilities. There are sofas and beanbags, board games and smart TV, and stylish country vibes throughout. It's a tad higgeldy-piggeldy, as all good cottages should be, though the uneven floors, low headroom, lots of steps and upstairs bedrooms mean it's not suitable for anyone with mobility issues – or for children under twelve.
But here's the thing – luxurious and well-equipped as it is, Half Moon Lane Cottage is not only about the humans who come to stay here, it's just as much about the hounds who bring them. There are no hidden dog-related costs and the cottage can accommodate as many dogs as you like. Brick, tile and wood floors throughout mean that muddy paws are not a problem. The furnishings and walls are wipeable and washable and the dogs are welcome anywhere in the house, even on your bed – though there are several dog beds and coveted fireside spaces for the pooches too. The garden is fully fenced, and dog treats and supplies come as standard, from tags and poo bags to tennis balls. There really is nothing the owners won't do for holidaying hounds, you just have to bark (or get your human to ask).
The local village has a shop and bakery, and pub and microbrewery (both dog-friendly), and there are six nature reserves within a five-mile radius of the cottage. If you can't find a different dog walk twice a day, you're not trying – Thetford Forest Park alone (twenty minutes' drive west) could keep you tramping around in glorious wooded surroundings for a week. Or an hour east are miles of sandy, dog-friendly beaches on the Suffolk coast. As good as it gets for hounds and humans? Bark once for yes and twice for hell, yes!
