If countryside is always 'rolling', then in the amazing grounds of The Mole Resort it also tumbles, spreads, unfurls and uncurls. This is North Devon at its most glorious, where the lodges and rooms of this sumptuous family resort make a fantastic base for a fun-filled country activity holiday, just half an hour's drive from Barnstaple and the coast.

There are guest rooms in and around the original manor house at the heart of the estate – in categories that range from Snug to Suite. Think hotel comforts, contemporary country design, and some of those sweeping countryside views, especially from the larger rooms. But to put yourself right in the picture, plump for one of the resort's luxurious, elevated self-catering lodges, spread right across the grounds and each with either meadow or valley views. They sleep four to eight people (in two to four bedrooms), and all have amazing outlooks, a private hot tub and a spacious, decked balcony with outdoor dining (Devon weather permitting!). They are stylish, open-plan, designer spaces, with plenty of natural light, excellent kitchens and bathrooms – and at least one en-suite master bedroom in each lodge. It's the well-thought-out extras that make them even better: all are dog-friendly, and there's also a pooch and bike-wash point at each lodge, plus cycle racks, umbrellas, torches, and even safety glassware for the hot tubs.

The Resort’s Cellars Pub offers local ales and microbrews, with their very own ale taking centre stage, and serves pub grub like Devon-caught haddock and chips, Devon-raised Ruby red beef burgers and home-made Shepherd’s pie. The Devon View Restaurant, winner of AA two rosettes, offers everything from breakfast and cream teas to dinner, again with plentiful local fare, and takeaways and barbecue packs are available for lodge guests. There’s also an on-site farm shop, with an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients and seasonal produce.

The extensive facilities include impressive outdoor and indoor heated swimming pools, a sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi and gym, and daily exercise classes. They’ve got all-weather tennis and pickleball courts, a croquet lawn and a five-a-side pitch –they even have their own parkland golf course. Other activities include archery and laser-clay shooting, and walks and cycle trails start right from the doorstep (rental bikes are available). The helpful resort staff can point you in the right direction, with mapped routes for all abilities.

Outstanding

We have just returned from a four-night stay at The Mole. We had a three-bed lodge with two bathrooms. From the moment we arrived, we were met with genuinely friendly and helpful staff who often went out of their way to help and make our stay outstanding. The lodges themselves are nothing short of spectacular, spotlessly clean and equipped with high quality, top-of-the-range fixtures and fittings etc. no expense has been spared making these buildings so amazing. You felt as if every single detail was carefully considered and even then taken up a level. You could easily compare them to the best hotel rooms anywhere, but they are so much more. Sitting on the outside deck, reading or watching the stars from the jacuzzi you feel relaxed and a bit special. The location is great with Exmoor and Dartmoor on either side yet still within easy reach of the North Devon coast. In summary, the Mole Resort at the Highbullen Hotel is so much more the sum of its parts it deserves all the success in the future. PS I thought I should list at least one or two criticisms for balance….. but honestly, none of us could think of any.

Amazing

I’ve made it to 47 years old without ever feeling motivated enough to leave a review, but am finally breaking my record for the Mole Resort. I stayed for a week with my wife and two teenage boys, the lodges were immaculate, the complex was amazing, the facilities were perfect and varied, and most importantly, all the staff were wonderful. We were originally intending to use the resort as a base to explore Exmoor and Dartmoor, but after tennis, swimming, pickle ball, the gym, shuffleboard, table tennis, the hot tub, spa treatments, and a quiz we actually got to the end of the week without leaving once. A special thanks to Will and the gang on the Activities team for entertaining our boys so well, perhaps next time you’ll beat one of them at pool! Great job Mole Resort!

Beautiful resort

Stayed at the Mole resort for 2 nights in the new cabins recently, it was a super lovely stay, the cabins were beautiful, clean and lovely views! Very peaceful and quiet, the rooms were open and spacious and the hot tub topped it off! Which was also well maintained. We had a 3-course meal in the restaurant which I have highly recommended all my friends to try! The food was absolutely fantastic, we also had a breakfast hamper and steak hamper for our 2nd night from the shop which was also very good fresh quality food very delicious! We took part in axe throwing and archery which was great fun! Our instructor Alex was the perfect fit for his job, he was very friendly, professional and good fun! Had us laughing the whole time so credit to him! Definitely going to take my friends back to do the activities! They also have a big games room indoors with shuffle boards, pool tables, and other games. Walking round the resort is also lovely, the grounds are beautiful. Overall 10/10 stay!

A must visit for whole family (including the family dog!)

The best UK holiday we've had! Rooms were fantastic - really high end. Food was incredible - especially at the Cellar's restaurant but also in the Bistrot. The service complemented this perfectly and made for a truly memorable experience. So many activities for the kids that even a rainy day was magical. It was great to see all this in such an eco-conscious resort. Highly recommend this place - we are already planning our next trip!

The perfect family weekend break

As a family we very much looked forward to our stay at the Mole Resort and expected to really enjoy ourselves - we did not however expect it to be as magical as it was! Just take us back there now!! The staff are amazing, the surroundings are breathtaking, the facilities are extensive and the restaurants were WOW! We stayed in the suite - very well worth the money! Pure luxury, a second bedroom made up for the children and a sauna and steam room for us to enjoy when the children were in bed. I’m not sure we have ever felt so relaxed! The large games room was excellent filled with pool tables, a shuffle board, ping pong, skittles, board games and a fabulous retro gaming machine gave us the opportunity to take a trip down memory lane and share Pac-Man and space invaders with our children! The pools were both very relaxing and a good temperature and it’s a good job the food is so excellent because it managed to drag us all away from staring at the mesmerising views from the restaurant. We will be back time and time again!

Very very impressed

First time staying here - very very impressed. Stayed in a large comfortable clean room with en-suite. Very quiet. Great leisure facilities (pool, gym, sauna etc etc). Restaurant very high quality, superb high-level food, very good breakfast. Staff incredibly good, so helpful, and WhatsApp system to notify us of events/cocktail of the day/any issues sorted was really efficient. Cannot recommend highly enough.
