The historic Welsh market town of Abergavenny is a happening foodie destination, close to the Brecon Beacons and under an hour from Cardiff – the sort of under-the-radar place for a weekend of great food and fun activities. Pick a self-catering cottage from Caradog Cottages and you can match your mood and interests – with a choice of places designated either 'town' or 'country', and all charmingly furnished in a contemporary country style while retaining lots of quirks and original features.
In Abergavenny town, there are five choices at different locations, each sleeping four people in two bedrooms. The Lodge is in the grounds of the town castle, which makes for a pretty special stay, while both Castle and Sugarloaf cottages are directly across from the Angel Hotel, which is part of the same group, so a natural choice for dinner or a drink. St John Square is also close by, while a fifth, Number 17, sits on the edge of town.
Or go 'country' for a more rural experience, with two adjoining cottages in the little village of Llandewi Skirrid (again, both sleep four people) and a third (sleeps six) just a five-minute drive away. If you've got your foodie hat on, you'll know that this is the location of the famed, Michelin-starred Walnut Tree restaurant. Either way, the guys at Caradog Cottages have you covered: if you stay in town, there are complimentary taxis out to the Walnut Tree; stay out in the country and they'll arrange for a lift into town to eat at The Angel.
All the cottages are beautifully appointed, equipped for what's termed 'light catering' and stocked with an excellent array of breakfast items, including things like smoked salmon and Greek yoghurt. Bathrooms are excellent throughout, with fluffy towels, bathrobes and fancy toiletries provided, while other facilities depend on the cottage but include things like Bluetooth radios, air-con units, coffee-makers and gas fireplaces. They all have some kind of outdoor space, with particularly nice gardens at Castle Cottage in town and Pont Gilbert in the country, and they can all accommodate dogs.
