Deep in the rolling countryside, between the edge of the Shropshire Hills and the Welsh market town of Montgomery, is where you’ll find the enchanting Kinton Escapes. There’s no TV, no WiFi, and limited mobile phone signal here – and that’s precisely why you’ll love it. You can enjoy a close-to-nature stay in a rustic cabin, an earthy-green yurt or a converted vintage bus, each of which is on its own with private outdoor space, plus a private shower and toilet. Board games, books and birdwatching are your entertainment, and fire offers heat, light and warmth.
A stay here feels like you’re going back in time, but with the rough edges rubbed off and fairy lights added for added enchantment. They’ve been put up by host Frankie who lives in the 15th-century farmhouse at the heart of Kinton Escapes. She’ll welcome you to the site, show you how everything works, then leave you to enjoy the peace of this tucked-away treasure. She might be the only soul you see all weekend, give or take a flock of sheep and some passing free-range chickens. But her care for the place can be seen everywhere – in the made-up beds, bohemian decor and countless thoughtful touches.
All the accommodation feels off grid, but in truth, it’s not quite. The hut and bus have electricity, but with the yurt (Kinton Cloud House), power is only available in a separate, well-equipped barn where you do your cooking. Inside the yurt itself, it’s candles, lanterns and a log burner only. Add to this its long-drop toilet and hot outside shower, and Kinton Cloud House is perhaps the most rustic of the lot. Having said that, it also has its own garden with space for croquet and boules. Whether you choose the yurt, the impossibly lovely timber Duck Hut or the bus (Kinton Old Number 1), each has a private garden area, kitchen facilities and indoor-outdoor living with covered outside seating and a fire pit as well.
Your views from each will be of the stunning Shropshire Hills. The famous Stiperstones are only a few miles away and make a good target for a walk, while other well-known peaks are worth a day trip. But even closer are lesser known heights you can head to on foot: Stapeley Hill, for example, with a Bronze Age stone circle at the top. Or you could drive a couple of miles to Priest Weston to conquer Corndon Hill before a pint at The Miner’s Arms, which, by the way, won’t do anything to change the impression that you’ve stepped back in time to the good old days of yore.
