Right on the main drag through the peaceful South Shropshire village of Lydbury North, The Powis Arms is an old Georgian coaching inn – part of the former country estate of Lord Clive of India and situated right by its main gates and drive. It's a friendly country pub, no question, with a warm welcome and good food. But as part of the estate it's also blessed with a multitude of accommodation options, from a pop-up summer campsite behind to the self-catering cottages and glamping on the estate itself. The pub also has a handful of very comfortable en-suite bedrooms upstairs, and the good thing is that wherever you stay you can enjoy the excellent breakfasts they serve here in the morning, not to mention the well-priced pub grub they serve the rest of the day.

Just a stone’s throw from the small and attractive Shropshire town of Bishop's Castle in one direction and Craven Arms and Ludlow in the other, the pub's location ticks just about every box if you're looking for a rural place to stay with plenty of walking on your doorstep.  It has four simple but very comfortable bedrooms upstairs, all with very comfortable beds and excellent en-suite bathrooms. one of which features a bath and the other three showers.  Each room has tea- and coffee-making facilities and is quirkily furnished with furniture, objects and paintings objects plundered from the buildings of Walcot Hall, giving each an individual, historic and cosy character. The campsite meanwhile has 12 pitches for caravans and campervans, each with an electrical hook-up, plus additional pitches for tents, and facilities include a heated shower and toilet block with washing-up areas and a chemical disposal point.

Managed by Lucy and Jackie, The Powis Arms is above all a good place for a drink,  with a good choice of Shropshire ales, a dog-friendly bar in which to enjoy them in and a separate restaurant with a wood-burning stove and semi-covered sunny deck at the rear. The pub features in nearby Bishop’s Castle real ale trail every July, and serves a seasonal menu, based on ingredients sourced from local butchers, fishmongers and game dealers and farmers, that revolves mainly around core pub dishes, including serious good burgers, x y and z; they also offer a kids' menu and serve a stonking Sunday Lunch. In short it's your perfect countryside retreat.

The Owner Says

The Powis Arms is a traditional Georgian coaching inn situated in the village of Lydbury North in South Shropshire. Perched at the front gates of Walcot Hall - a grand country estate formerly residence to Lord Clive of India. The Parish family have been at Walcot since 1957 and they have always shared their family home with the outside world – it would be a shame not to with all it has to offer!

Managed by Lucy, The Powis Arms is a friendly country pub with four B&B rooms and a well-positioned campsite, with 12 pitches for touring caravans, each with an electrical hook up, plus additional pitches for tents. Our restaurant produces food using the finest ingredients that the county has to offer and our bar is the perfect place to enjoy the best of Shropshire’s local ales.

Just a stone’s throw from Ludlow and its famous food festival and surrounded by some of the countries most glorious hill walking, The Powis Arms is the perfect base for any country adventure.

Taste the best of local food and ales that the county has to offer. Treat your family to a traditional Shropshire Sunday lunch, or meet up with friends to sample our locally sourced seasonal menus over lunch or dinner. If a quiet drink is more your thing, try one of our award-winning local real ales and ciders out on the sun-filled deck. For the ale fanatics, we take part in the yearly Bishop’s Castle beer trail.
