Dating back to the 16th century, this Grade II-listed coaching inn reopened a couple of years ago after a major refurbishment, and is a lovely old pub that's had some life breathed into it by its new owners, the West Country Butcombe Brewery. Situated on the edge of the Cotswolds, not far from the small but historic town of Malmesbury in Wiltshire, it makes for a tremendous place to stay while soaking up the delights of what is an extremely historic area – home to Malmesbury Abbey, among many other attractions.
The pub has five beautifully updated bedrooms, divided between spacious 'Signature' and cosier 'Snug' on the top floor. They're all nicely decorated with either freestanding baths or showers and luxury toiletries. Smart TVs, tea and coffee, and where there's room, a desk. As for the food, it's worth a trip even if you're not staying: very seasonal, and very pubby too, with a good selection of steaks, delicious local venison in season, a decent burger and fish and chips, as well as more adventurous dishes like ox-cheek bourguignon, duck rillettes and squash risotto – all naturally washed down with some of Butcombe's excellent beers. They also serve a selection of roasts on Sunday and sandwiches at lunchtime, which you can enjoy in the garden outside in summer.
