There’s a lot to like about this friendly, privately-owned hotel just north of Newport in Cwmbran. Situated in a low-slung modern set of buildings, it has 80 very comfortable guest bedrooms of all shapes and sizes, many of which have been recently refurbished, and it has recently diversified by adding a shepherds hut in its extensive grounds. With a well-equipped spa, featuring a heated pool, sauna, steam room and gym, it makes a good base for all parts of southeastern Wales, not far from the English border but just a 30-minute drive from Cardiff to the south. It's also the most obvious base if you're visiting Newport's RSPB reserve or the Big Pit coal mining museum at the top of the valley, with the lively regional centres of Abergavenny and Crickhowell just beyond.
The hotel's guest rooms are very well-appointed and come with the sort of facilities you expect in a decent four-star, and a little bit more – speedy wifi, TVs, tea-and coffee-making facilities, air-conditioning, robes and en-suite bathrooms. Rooms range from Trecently refurbished de-luxe doubles to Garden Suites with private patios, which are dog friendly, Junior Suites, and very spacious Penthouse Suites. Uniquely, they also have a Shepherd's Hut – Shepherd's Cwtch – in the grounds, which is very cosy all year round and frankly a cut above most glamping, with an en-suite bathroom, underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove – and, best of all, access to all the hotel's facilities, including the spa.
As for other facilities, the hotel has a 2 AA-rosette restaurant which serves an excellent, fairly traditional but very well executed menu, and they also serve bar food in the lounge. Dogs are provided with beds, treats and a special canine menu for dinner, and although the restaurant is not open to canine chums, you can eat in the lounge, and the grounds offer easy off-lead walks. All in all a comfortable retreat with no pretensions and really excellent service throughout.
