The Ferry
Sutton Road Cookham Berkshire SL6 9SN
Whether it's Mum's birthday, kids' tea or a summer evening's escape with your other half, the Ferry is a good bet for a scenic bite. Overlooking the Thames at Cookham, it's a big place: two floors that mix English country kitchen décor with Buddha heads, cowhide rugs and other decorative flourishes. Outside there's a deck with more tables and steps down to the river – an idyllic spot when the sun's out. The menu is a cosy mix of British and Mediterranean favourites, including wood-fired pizzas, mezze platters and rib-sticking puds (try the summer berry & bilberry Eton Mess). There's a bar menu too, which may be required if you make inroads into the comprehensive and ever-evolving range of cocktails. Frisky Bison, anyone? Note: sister pubs The St George & Dragon at Wargrave and The Warren at Wokingham offer a similar menu and atmosphere.
