For a bit of country style boutique accommodation, look no further than Sanctum Hotels' venture in the heart of picturesque Cookham Dean in the Berkshire countryside. With a cool vibe and attitude honed at their Soho London address, Sanctum on the Green puts nine boutique rooms and suites into a 17th-century coach house and then gives the whole thing a twist.
The venerable building is a beauty in any case, surrounded by the green fields of Berkshire, and the individually designed rooms do it full justice – three standard rooms (king-sized beds) with bathrooms with walk-in showers, and the rest with super-king beds, bigger bathrooms and a choice of locations around the hotel, from poolside to coach house. The standard rooms are described as 'crash pads', which is more about size than facilities, because they have all the same excellent amenities as the other rooms, from Egyptian cotton bed linen to super fluffy towels and organic toiletries. No such size qualms about the suite though – it takes up the entire first floor of the pool house and features a six-foot-square bath big enough for two.
The outdoor spaces are lovely, especially around the heated pool or in the enclosed courtyard – and with so few rooms, it always feels a little like your own personal retreat. Food and drink is courtesy of the Mole & Badger, billed as 'pub and shokudo', which means casual Japanese-inspired dining – again, from a concept by Michelin star chef, Garry Hollihead, pioneered at the sister restaurant and hotel, the Karma Sanctum Soho. Eat in the garden in summer, or in front of the fire in winter – and at only an hour or so from London, it's a destination-dining place for anyone looking to escape the city for a few hours. Stay the night and the genteel attractions of England's most favoured corner are on your doorstep. Windsor and Henley-on-Thames are close by, the Chiltern Hills in the near distance, and even Oxford is just under an hour away.
