Durham Light Infantry Museum
Aykley Heads Durham DH1 5TU
Uniforms, medals, weapons and stories of derring-do – this excellent museum explores all things to do with the County Durham Light Infantry, from its formation in 1758 to when it finally put down its banners in 1968. Exploring the fate of many of the Regiment’s soldiers throughout the First and Second World Wars, there’s a particular emphasis on remarkable stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things, with plenty of Victoria Crosses on show. On the same site is Durham’s premier contemporary art gallery, exhibiting regularly changing works by local artists.
