Wordsworth House
Main Street Cockermouth CA13 9RX
For all Grasmere’s claim to Wordsworth and his circle, the poet was actually born in the handsome Georgian town of Cockermouth in the western Lakes, where his former family home is open to the public. It’s billed as an innovative visitor experience. What this means in practice is keen-to-please staff dressed in period costume showing you how a well-to-do 18th-century family would have lived, from kitchen cook to gardener. Kids in particular will love it, as they get to dress up and join in, whether it's helping the servants or gardeners or listening to historic tales or poetry readings.
