Fancy a break in one of England’s most spectacular setting with almost 50 friends? How about hiring yourselves a country mansion on the banks of Derwentwater in the Lake District? Hawse End Centre is just that: an impressively large country house that’s been converted into hostel-style accommodation for visiting groups. Situated just off the water, with Catbells fell immediately behind, it’s a great location for all sorts of adventures. And, as it’s operated by outdoor education specialists, Cumbria Outdoors, it’s easy to get expert help with group activities on and off the water (subject to availability). It’s a popular place for school and DofE groups to stay, but it’s also available on a self-catering basis for private groups like yours!
Numbers here are impressive: 20 parking spaces, 10 bedrooms and space to sleep 49. There’s one en-suite bedroom just for two – the rest sleep between four and six in bunk beds. There’s also the separate Hawse End Cottage which sleeps up to 24 more. It’s a great set-up for several families who want to holiday together or groups of friends who are happy to share. And as this is hostel-style living, you need to be prepared to pitch in. Towels aren't provided, and while bed linen is, you're asked to make your own bed. This is good-value accommodation in a location that’s hard to beat.
Downstairs at the centre, you’ll find a lounge with a TV, a vast dining room and a catering-style kitchen that’s amply equipped for making breakfast, lunch and dinner for your gang – or, if you don't want to spend the whole time cooking, catering is available and rather handy for big groups (subject to availability).
Cumbria Outdoors can also help with your outdoor adventures. You may be here specifically to sightsee around Keswick and Derwentwater, which is easy thanks to the Keswick Launch stopping at the Hawse End jetty several times a day. Or perhaps you’re here to tackle a particular peak – England’s highest, Scafell Pike, isn’t too far away. Or maybe you need a few ideas? Cumbria Outdoors can help with that. Canoe rafting, climbing, orienteering and mountain walking are all activities they can arrange – just make sure you book this sort of thing in advance.
