The Electric Palace
35 South Street, Bridport DT6 3NY
You might not know it, but Bridport has a lively arts scene, and the Electric Palace lies at the heart of it. Having lain derelict for years, this wonderful art deco building, a former opera house and cinema, has been beautifully restored to host comedy, theatre, music and films, and has a lively café/bar in its foyer. There are all sorts of events throughout the year, including live opera screenings from the New York Met, complete with dinner served during the interval; there’s a strong showing of folk bands in the music line-up; and it’s also one of the host venues of the popular Bridport Literary Festival (www.bridlit.com), which takes place in early November each year and has attracted big-name authors, such as Minette Walters, Alexander Waugh, Lady Antonia Fraser and Louis De Bernières since its inception in 2005.
