Norburton Hall is a lovely country manor house with extensive grounds that just happens also to be home to some extremely stylish self-catering cottage accommodation. Surrounded by six acres of rolling lawns and woodlands, the house was originally built some 400 years ago but remodelled in Arts-and-Crafts style in 1901. Today it is grand without being too formal, with an imposing main hall, complete with sweeping staircase and stained-glass windows, and lots of Arts-and-Crafts features.

The estate's various outbuildings – stables, haylofts and the like – have been converted into a series of extremely well-kitted-out self-catering units, each of which makes for a fantastic cottage retreat just a stone's throw from the famous Jurassic Coast (indeed one of the nicest things about Norburton Hall is that you can walk from here to the sea from here).

There are five cottages in all, sleeping from two people (the Hayloft, the Stables, Dairy Cottage) to four people (the Shippen) to eight (Gardener's Cottage), and furnished in contemporary style, with flatscreen TVs and DVD players and well-equipped kitchens; a couple have underfloor heating and are dog-friendly (the only one furnished in a traditional cottagey style is Dairy Cottage). The welcome is warm, and if you pre-order one of their lovely Dorset Produce Boxes you're set up for provisions before you arrive. It's a lovely self-catering option in a really fantastic location.

Walking is very popular with scenic walks right from the door. Cyclists and anglers are all catered for with lockable storage and an outdoor smoker for any mackerel caught on the beach. Alternatively, if you're not off exploring the surrounding coast and countryside or fossil hunting on the beaches, just laze in the grounds under the spreading canopy of mature trees. Enjoy cycling along hollow ways or ridgeways with spectacular views along the coast – electric bikes as well as conventional bikes can be hired. Angling is popular and an outdoor smoker has just been installed in the grounds of the Hall for guests' use. Literary trails – Thomas Hardy, Jane Austen, John Fowles and T E Lawrence were all inspired by the local landscape. The TV drama, Broadchurch, was filmed on the cliffs from Burton Bradstock along the coast to Eype.

Pricing

Self-catering prices start at £295 for a short break in low season and around £700 per week for a cottage sleeping 2 in high season; Gardener's Cottage – sleeping 8 – costs around £580 for an low season short break to £1,525 for a week in high season.

The Owner Says

An idyllic setting where you can instantly relax. The Hall is enveloped by its own private, peaceful grounds situated in a picturesque village on the Jurassic Coast. The accommodation is full of character with original features dating back to 1640. In 1902, Norburton Hall was transformed into a delightful Arts and Crafts country house retreat with stone mullion windows, carved fireplaces, a grand carved wooden staircase, stained glass windows and an iridescent peacock fireplace by Walter Crane. The five comfortable holiday cottages (sleep 2–8) provide an excellent base for enjoying coast and countryside with wonderful places to dine including an award-winning beach café within easy walking distance. Perfect for a weekend get-away, cosy coastal bolt hole or for family gatherings. Two cottages are pet-friendly and have welcomed many well-behaved dogs and cats.
