St Catherine's Chapel
Abbotsbury Dorset DT3 4LF
Sat on a grassy hilltop surrounded by sheep, St Catherine's Chapel is one of the most distinctive landmarks in this part of Dorset. Built in the fourteenth century, the exterior looks surprisingly intact – it's only when you go inside that you realise it is, in fact, a ruin. Special services are still sometimes held here (it has wonderful acoustics) and you can understand why it inspired PJ Harvey to write her song The Wind. To reach the chapel, it's an easy 5–10 minute walk from Abbotsbury; once up, you get fantastic views across the village one side and the extensive Fleet Lagoon on the other.
