The Spyglass Inn
Esplanade Ventnor PO38 1JX
The Spyglass has a good reputation for its food – lovely seafood chowders and curries – and is busy year-round with locals and tourists, especially at the weekends when they often have live music. It is one of the oldest buildings on the Esplanade, dating from around 1830 and, despite its popularity, you can usually find a table, sometimes even one with magnificent views of Ventnor Bay and out across the Channel. Inside, the pub is a warren of nooks, stalls and original nautical bric-a-brac. The spyglass is a traditional old charmer with an enviable position on the seafront. The open terrace makes the most of its position while the family owners (now in their 26th year) know how to keep everything ship-shape.
