Shanklin Chine
Chine Hill Shanklin PO37 6BW
Once used as a Royal Marine training area, this 32-metre deep ravine covers an area of three acres and is a wonderfully immersive experience, with its steep sides and tumbling, rainforest-like flora. The sympathetic natural soundtrack from the two waterfalls and spectacular artificial lighting combine with the views from the strategically angled walkways to create a journey of verdant beauty. You enter either from the southern end of Shanklin Esplanade and climb to the top, or descend from Shanklin Old Village high on the cliff. Try to arrive either an hour before sunset for the best lighting, or early in the morning for a better chance of seeing the red squirrels (the Isle of Wight is one of their UK strongholds and the Chine a favourite spot). Allow an hour and a half.
