The Castle Inn
Chiddingstone Kent TN8 7AH
Medieval Chiddingstone, owned in its entirety by the National Trust, is an impossibly picturesque setting for this historic village pub, where excellent gastro food is served in low-ceilinged shadowy rooms, or – and this is a must when the weather allows – in a large, leafy, flower-filled garden. The chef has great credentials, having worked with such greats as Albert Roux and Michel Bourdin, and this really shows in the food, which is more than a cut above the usual gastro offerings. Good burgers and posh sausage and mash are on offer, but also slow roasted lamb or pork and always one or two creative veggie options. The sandwiches and ploughman's platters are posher than average, while the dessert list specializes in top-notch British comfort puds.
