Nestled in tiny Danehill, on the borders of East and West Sussex, The Nest is a lofty, light-filled woodland hideaway, yet only a three-minute stroll to an award-winning local pub. Set in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and on the edge of the Ashdown Forest, famously home to Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends, this wonderful cottage is highly rated by guests, with over 80 five-star reviews across various platforms. A stay here includes everything you might need for a couple’s romantic retreat, a small family getaway, or a few days of creative working. Not only that, The Nest is super-luxurious, too.
The treehouse-style first-floor entrance opens into a spacious, beautifully designed studio with a living room and dining/work area. You'll find ample sleeping space for four guests, with a sumptuous four-poster bed and a comfy double sofa bed with Egyptian cotton bed linen. There's a marble-tiled bathroom with a double-ended bath and rainwater shower with waterfall taps, and guests are treated to fluffy towels and bath robes. Downstairs, a fully-equipped kitchen includes a cooker, fridge, Nespresso coffee machine, washer/dryer, plus a stock of tea, coffee, milk, biscuits, and other basics. Enjoy the views of the woods while sitting at the breakfast bar.
The cottage has everything you need, your host Serena has made sure of that, kitting out this purpose-built guest accommodation to an extremely high standard. Fast full fibre Wi-Fi and a Smart flat-screen TV make sure you stay connected. Serena is usually there to meet you on arrival – The Nest sits within the grounds of her house – and she is often around just in case you need her. But otherwise you won't see her and it’s totally private – you even have a little garden space to yourselves with seating in the dappled shade of an old pear tree.
When you’re comfortably cocooned in this timber-clad cottage, looking out on the leafy canopy of the surrounding woodland, it’s easy to see why it was christened The Nest. Throw open the French windows and the sound of birdsong from neighbouring trees is interrupted only by the occasional peal of bells from Danehill church or, once in a while, by the whistle of steam trains on the Bluebell Railway as they chug past nearby.
This is life in Sussex at its tranquil best – ideal for a long weekend or even a week away exploring the many attractions nearby including Wakehurst Botanical Gardens, the Bluebell Railway and Sheffield Park National Trust Gardens or head to The South Downs National Park or Brighton and the South Coast and – all within a 45-minute drive. Alternatively, you can walk to Ashdown Forest or the bluebell woods over the babbling brook bridge, before eating dinner at the cosy Coach & Horses pub – without needing to get in the car at all. There are lots of suggestions in the coittage, including OS maps, walking routes and cycle paths.
You may not have heard of the charming village of Danehill, but it’s very conveniently located for public transport and easily reached from London, whose southern outskirts are only 30 miles away. Ashdown Forest is an ancient place of heath and woodland and is also the largest area of open-access land in the southeast and well worth a visit – much like The Nest itself.

Didn’t want the weekend to end
Perfect place for our weekend away and didn’t want it to end. So much thought and attention has clearly been given to each detail. Serena is great, the location is ideal and there is plenty of privacy. Definitely get a meal in at the nearby pub.

Couldn’t fault The Nest
We stayed at The Nest Danehill in Sussex for a long weekend to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life and it was the perfect spot to destress. The friendly and helpful owner greeted us to do a handover and we were delighted when we saw the beautiful woodland setting and the high standard of interior design and furnishings. There is a gorgeous four-poster bed, luxurious bathroom, a lovely bright and comfortable open plan sitting room with a dining/work area with great views to the nearby woods and a very well-equipped kitchen downstairs. The WiFi was excellent. The smallest details had been thought of to ensure we had a home-from-home experience with everything that we needed for our stay and it felt very private. We had a delicious supper at the Coach & Horses country pub with real ales and only a very short stroll up the lane! We found some wonderful walks on public footpaths across the footbridge into the woods straight from The Nest and walked to the glorious Ashdown Forest and did some cycling around the area. Brighton was only 45 mins by car, and we had an afternoon on the beach and dinner at Brighton Marina which was great fun. We also enjoyed a visit to the famous Bluebell Steam Railway in nearby Sheffield Park. We went to a concert and had dinner at Trading Boundaries 10 minutes away which was fabulous. There was basically so much to do in the area that we needed more time but were equally happy just to enjoy the peaceful space of the property and its small private garden. We couldn’t fault The Nest in any way and didn’t want to leave so would highly recommend and hope to return soon!

Exceptional
Spent a lovely couple of nights here at the end of March. Serena was the perfect host ensuring we had everything we needed, including a well-stocked kitchen. The apartment was great and exactly as described. Lovely to have a local pub just a couple of minutes up the road. Would most definitely recommend.

Absolute delight
I stayed at The Nest on the night before my wedding with one of my bridesmaids & it was an absolute dream! Serena was so incredibly kind, she made sure that even the little things were ready for us like the sofa bed, milk in the fridge & all of the wi-fi passwords/codes etc. were ready for us to set up & connect to. I got ready there on the morning of my wedding & had lots of people in & out & Serena basically made sure that I had absolutely nothing to do other than relax. The space was clear so that all of my lovely team could set up immediately with no issues. Although the cottage isn’t the largest, it feels incredibly spacious & open & airy. I was worried about people tripping over each other or feeling a little claustrophobic but we had no issue at all. It was an absolute delight to stay there & me & my husband will definitely be back.

Beautiful place
We spent a quiet night at Serena's cottage on our way cycling to Brighton. it's perfectly located just off the "official" cycle route that runs through Turners Hill and Haywards Heath. The Coach and Horses is a beautiful pub. Everything was as clean as described.

Will definitely be returning.

Luxury
Delightful little spot of luxury in the middle of beautiful English countryside. Serena met us to show us around and had so carefully and thoughtfully laid things out for our 2yr old daughter. Pre-arrival communication was clear and efficient. The bathroom and kitchen facilities were excellent and there were additional thoughtful touches that were the icing on the cake, like milk, coffee and cereals.

Perfect In Every Way
I loved everything about staying here. The interior design was spectacular and the comfort was divine. There was absolutely everything we needed from cooking utensils to iron and of the highest quality. Probably one of the best places I have stayed. The children loved the little Winnie the pooh inspired garden. Perfect in every way.

Highly recommend
We stayed at The Nest for three nights and immediately felt at home. The place is exceptionally clean and beautifully decorated, with nice furnishings and excellent storage making it a real home from home. The kitchen was well equipped with everything you would need to cook with in terms of utensils and pans, the basics of oil, salt and pepper which you would expect, along with bread, coffee, tea, milk and butter which was a nice touch. The bathroom was well stocked with products, and a lovely big bath to soak in after a day of walking was welcomed. Serena was an excellent host, from efficient communication before and during our stay to providing recommendations for local places to eat and drink and things to do. We had an Indian take away from Hathi, a short drive away which was excellent and a meal out at the local pub, the Coach and Horses where the food was beautifully cooked. Serena recommended some excellent walks in the surrounding countryside, with clear-to-follow circular routes shared starting from The Nest. Along with some ideas for things to do resulting in us attending a charity event with live music and street food at the local Bluebell Vineyard which was good fun. We loved our stay at The Nest and are already talking about going back in the autumn for more walks and to visit Sheffield Park. Highly recommend booking this wonderful home from home. We booked via the host's own website and found this to be very efficient.

Wow! What can I say! We had the most tranquil time away and have come away truly revived. This place is just incredible! A friendly welcome from Serena and her husband on arrival. The lodge itself is just beautiful and in the most stunning location nestled in the countryside with views from every angle. Such An Awesome Find
Such an awesome find. I would go just to chill here and degustate (ok, ok, eat well) at the Coach and Horses nearby. Perfect base too, for Wakehurst Botanical Gardens and Charles Darwin’s House. I confess I didn’t feel the need to look because there is no fault to find.

Could not recommend more!
What a wonderful stay we had here at The Nest. We could not recommend this little retreat more! Serena was the perfect host and so accommodating. Everywhere was beautifully presented and if you have children, our daughter spent hours playing in the eaves cupboards which housed her favorite Winnie the Pooh teddies and some lovely books. The setting is so picturesque and perfect for a little countryside getaway. Thank you Serena for a truly magical time!

Would definitely stay again!
Serena and Michael were both very friendly, and The Nest was very comfortable. The milk and other essentials provided for our arrival were a lovely touch, the bathroom was spotlessly clean, the bed was incredibly comfortable, and there was plenty of space for us to stay for three nights with our 5-year-old sleeping on the sofa bed. The location was perfect for our planned excursions to the Bluebell Railway and Wakehurst. We would definitely stay here again when visiting this part of the country. Thank you for a lovely stay!
