Want to get away for a countryside break but don't want to go far, and don't have unlimited funds either? This converted shepherd's hut for two in deepest East Sussex, in the heart of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, might just be for you. Wonderfully situated on the banks of a series of rural lakes, just over an hour's drive from London, you can fish, go wild swimming, and it's just a short walk from a number of idyllic villages and country pubs. We reckon that ticks most of the important boxes for a romantic short break in the country. Owners Geri and Mark also live nearby and are affable and welcoming hosts who can tell you all about the local area.

With its waterside location, this is definitely more of a Fisherman's Hut than a Shepherd's Hut. Although undeniably compact, it's extremely well equipped and comfortable: there's a mini kitchen complete with fridge, kettle, toaster, microwave oven, gas hob and all the crockery and cutlery you're likely to need, and a welcome pack on arrival containing tea, coffee, sugar, milk, drinking water, juice, bread and butter. Country air or not, you'll get a good night's sleep on the comfy double bed, and there's wifi, a bluetooth speaker and also a TV with Freeview for cosy nights in. There is a well-appointed (and warm!) toilet and shower nearby (hand towels are provided but you need to bring bath towels), plus you have access to a large fridge/freezer and there's even a washing machine. Heated with its own log-burning stove, the hut is warm and toasty throughout the year and you're provided with a basket of logs to get you started, with more are available on request for a small fee. There's also a private garden with a barbecue and outdoor furniture for a spot of al fresco dining.

It's a great place to come to with a dog and you can bring yours but you must keep it on a lead due to Geri and Mark's small herd of cows and sheep; they also prefer that you keep them out of the water and off the bed. As for things to do nearby, you can walk in about 20 minutes to the nearby village of Hadlow Down, where there is a terrific – and very historic – local pub, The New Inn; and there's also an excellent gastropub, The White Hart, a longer walk (or short drive) away in Buxted. A few miles north, Ashdown Forest is as gorgeous as it was in the days of Winnie the Pooh, or you can just stroll around the lakes and into the nearby fields and ancient woodlands, which offer lovely views over the South Downs along with wildflowers and various wildlife, from deer, rabbits and foxes to partridge, goldfinches and kingfishers. One of the lakes is available for wild swimming while in the others you can  join the other fisherfolk and try to catch yourself a record-breaking carp or two!

Hidden Gem

My partner and I spent three nights at this truly beautiful place recently and were amazed at the site . The shepherds hut named Roach was fitted out at such a high standard and complete with everything you would need and more. The bed was extremely comfortable and the log burner was put to good use as the evenings were quite chilly.. Extremely high standards of hygiene and cleanliness The hosts Geraldine and Mark were warm, friendly people who greeted us with warm freshly baked rolls and croissants which was a lovely touch. The lakes were well stocked with a variety of fish, one of the lakes is completely accessible for disabled visitors Mark was very helpful..offering plenty of advice and assistance. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend this to anyone fishing and non fishing as a delightful tranquil get away. We will definitely be coming back and are looking to book for next summer especially as I'd love to swim in the designated swimming lake with its crystal clear spring fed water.😁 Helen and Darren

A beautiful place

A beautiful place to stay whether you fish or not, very quiet and relaxing. The huts are lovely and cosy and very well thought out with everything you may need, lovely hanging baskets and bird feeders on the verandah give it an extra touch. Geraldine and Mark are lovely, very accommodating and friendly and go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need. Hot rolls and croissants when we arrived and milk and eggs in the fridge, lovely! Thanks so much, we will be back. Sharon and Mark

Home away from home!

I would highly recommend booking to stay here if you like peace, quiet and being with nature, the land is beautiful and we love the natural spring at the top which you can swim in. We have a dog and it's a great place for him too. We have stayed in the Roach Hut twice already this year and have already booked for next year. The hut itself has everything you need to cook a meal and the bed is super comfortable. I enjoy having breakfast looking over the lake, there is a lot of wildlife to spot too. Geraldine and Mark are such amazing hosts who are super friendly and helpful, I love the welcome pack they provide as well. We randomly needed a larger freezer and they were able to help us! Can't wait to visit next year!

Total relaxation

This little hut with its sparkling clean interior was an absolute must for my darling husband and I Rob was an avid fisherman and fished all over the world but became so poorly so quickly last year I wanted one more fishing trip under his belt. It was magical the wild life was amazing and to be able to watch from a toastie warm hut whilst the rain fell was heaven on earth for Rob We planned to revisit in the spring but he lost the battle Both Geraldine and her brother made our stay so special with their kindness and giving you your privacy I would not hesitate to give them all the gold stars I can muster The perfect Fishermans retreat I will return one day to experience it all over again

Restful, Peaceful and Beautiful.

A log burner in the moonlight, a cold glass of a nice drink, the silence of nature, and the sound of a carp jumping were the setting for each evening of my second stay. The reception received was so welcoming, and caring, and the accommodation is outstanding and has everything that is needed. I will make sure I return again and again. The quiet morning sunrise, sitting on you're lakeside decking is something to remember, and a relaxing day that follows lets you recharge and forget the worries of normal day-to-day stuff. Great course fishing and a chance to catch a big carp are just one of many things to pass the time. The location is ideal for those who enjoy walking. I can not recommend this place enough.
