Best pub in Pickering? That'll be the cheery Sun, a little way along the Helmsley road from the centre. It's a handsome-looking real-ale, real-cider place and they absolutely don't do food, because the vibe here is drinks, gatherings and entertainment – from bookclub meeting to summer gigs in the garden. Since they opened in 2010 they've featured hundreds of Yorkshire-brewed beers, which in good weather at least you get to sink in the big beer garden out back, which comes complete with a petanque area. Indoors, there's anything from pub quizzes and wine-tastings to live music and jam sessions throughout the year.
