Cedarbarn
Thornton Road Pickering North Yorkshire YO18 7JX
Best farm shop and café on the eastern side of the national park? That would be Cedarbarn, set just off the A170 outside Pickering, on the Thornton le Dale road. It's a slick operation, run by a local farming family and has its own butchery on site, which means home-reared beef and lamb alongside locally sourced chicken and pork. The shop is pretty amazing – a larder of home-grown, home-produced fruit, veg, cheese, deli stuff and ready meals, as well as fish from the coast and Wolds-brewed beer. A lot of the produce turns up on the café menu too, which reflects the seasons, so expect spring asparagus and six different varieties of summer strawberries, not to mention their own Aberdeen Angus burgers and steaks. Sunday lunch is hugely popular – best to book – and we'd come a long way for the big breakfasts of free-range eggs, slow-roast tomatoes and buttered mushrooms.
