BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art
Gateshead NE8 3BA
Since it opened in 2002, the BALTIC has been at the cutting-edge of Newcastle's contemporary art scene. Housed in a monumental old quayside flour mill, the sheer scale is impressive enough – whatever it is that you've come to see, don't forsake a trip to the top floors for the stunning riverside view from the terrace. Huge galleries devote themselves to regularly changing international exhibitions, and there are also workshops, concerts, children's events, a rooftop restaurant, and ground-floor cafe and shop. It's a must-visit on any Newcastle trip, especially as it's free entry to most things, which is pretty amazing.
