The restaurant of the rather wonderful hotel of the same name makes the most of its excellent location in this Arts and Crafts mansion overlooking the park, and has a well-deserved reputation as a place for a special occasion. Quite right too: the food is refined, Michelin-star standard, served with style and aplomb in an elegantly turned-out dining room that attracts as many non-residents as it does people staying at the hotel. The menu is carefully judged and draws as much as possible on local sources, and the food is hearty rather than fancy for the sake of it. Plus they do a regular and a veggie tasting menu. And if you don't want to do the full fine-dining thing, they serve a good-value and delicious 2- and 3-course lunch menu – and roasts on Sunday too. A treat.
