Ikon Gallery
1 Oozells Square Brindleyplace Birmingham B1 2HS
It may be housed in a beautiful neo-Gothic building, but the art displayed within the Ikon is distinctly contemporary. Furthermore, this airy modern gallery tends to showcase art in all its forms – film, photography, sculpture and installations are all shown through a series of temporary exhibitions held over two floors. Suffice to say, the work exhibited here is often ambitious, and the gallery is well-thought-of in the international art world. Just as impressive, though, is the fact that Ikon is not just about trundling down airy galleries, but also about supporting artistic ventures outside of the gallery, with an 'off-site' programme that puts art out into the open and actively engages the public. The Ikon further stimulates public interest in art with its regular schedule of talks and events. Perhaps it really is 'a gallery without walls?'
