The Flapper
Cambrian Wharf Kingston Row Birmingham B1 2NU
This fabled venue has caught many a buzz band on the way up, and still continues to have its finger on the pulse when it comes to hosting the hottest new bands. Sure, the ceilings are low and the floor sticky, but the basement bar is still one of the best places to catch a raucous gig. Upstairs offers more breathing space, with ample room for sweaty gig-goers to catch their breath, drink some ale and shoot pool. It seems as though every couple of years the Flapper is threatened with closure for one reason or another – and certainly its canalside location and proximity to booming Brindley Place would make it a prosperous spot for some funky city centre developer – but thankfully the gig-goers of Birmingham refuse to let it happen.
