The mac (formerly the Midlands Arts Centre) is an esteemed arts centre attracting people from all over the UK, thanks to an inclusive programming of events. With art exhibitions, film screenings, concerts, theatre showings and art classes for all ages, it manages to cater to a wide demographic without ever feeling remotely tokenistic – quite a feat. And with a recent cash injection of £15m, the mac looks set to hold on to its title of the Midlands' most visited arts centre, with a continually updated and extensive schedule of creative projects. Situated in Cannon Hill Park, a pastoral patch of greenland in the Edgbaston area, its location is superb too, and even if you're not inclined to check out an event you could do worse than wander the grounds and marvel at the architecture, or simply content yourself with a drink at the Arena Bar.
