The Lord Clifden
34 Great Hampton Street Hockley Birmingham B18 6AA
On the outskirts of the Jewellery Quarter, in Hockley, resides one of Brum's Urban Art Bars – an inspiring new venture by street art collector-cum-pub gaffer Graham Smith. If the term ‘street-art’ conjures up images of kids with spray cans producing facile graffiti sketches, then rest assured this place is classier than that: against a backdrop of exposed brick, you'll find authentic and lauded pieces by veritable artists such as Banksy, Blek Le Rat and Obey. But a pub is only as good as what comes out of the handpulls, and to that end there is still plenty to go for: Bathams and Wye Valley ales keep the loyal regulars coming back for more, while the slushy ciders please the more adventurous imbiber – as does the food, which is served throughout the day from several menus that have everything from a bacon sarnie (Brunch menu) to Clifden chilli con carne (Quickie menu) to a surfeit of burgers and other main plate options such as confit belly of pork Asian spices and stilton and broccoli tart.
