Keeping Birmingham's fledgling rock stars in plectrums and guitar strings is Moseley's Shades Music. Guitar slingers, in particular, will be able to spend an insurmountable amount of time here, given the varied stock of Strats, Telecasters, Gibsons and acoustics. For musicians harbouring 'folkier' aspirations there's a fine selection of banjos, ukuleles and other stringed instruments, plus a nice collection of distortion pedals for noise junkies, as well as keyboards and other instruments. A family-run shop, Shades also specializes in guitar repairs and setups. But perhaps the most interesting thing about Shades is that it is what was once the home of JRR Tolkien, making it the ultimate hippy hangout, bar none.
